Even as this week’s mail-out lands with a firm thud in your inbox, The NMO is already half way to Oslo, enjoying a complimentary cup of airline tea, and flicking eagerly through the live music schedule for this year’s by:Larm Festival. One of the first bands we will be looking out for is our latest Artist of The Week, Denmark’s splendid The River Phoenix. With their glowing musical mixture echoing the likes of Band of Horses, Coheed & Cambria, and even Placebo, it’s clear that this is a band with fine taste while the recent support slots with The Stills, and Smashing Pumpkins suggests a group with the solid ambition to hit great heights. We won’t argue with that. We’ll be dragging as many people along to the gigs as possible. The debut album, ‘Ritual’, was recorded with Pelle Gunnerfeldt (The Hives, Logh) behind the desk and we are fortunate to feature a  demo version of a brand new track here.

Bellman makes music that is relentless in its pursuit of gushing, cinematic romance. The kind of music so packed with sad beauty it can make you die of heartache. He shamelessly throws in a kitchen sink-full of lush orchestration capable of making grown men weep, topped with an angelic voice that sends so many shivers down your spine that you need to put on a thick jumper to listen to it. During Bellman’s by:Larm concert, The NMO (normally a sucker for melancholic orchestration) wasn’t prepared for something quite so glorious, witnessing several females passing out around us and at least one guy proposing marriage to a complete stranger. Be warned; even the Weeping Willows at their most tender moments sound like Hardcore Industrial Metal compared to this.

The NMO’s featured artist this week is certainly a strange mixture. The ingredients of Eternal Erection consists of one part ‘party’, one part ‘hot funk’, one part ‘cartoon’, and one part ‘smooth soul’ that all adds up to a larger-than-life explosion of groovy sound and colour. The band is famous for touring Europe in their Funky Bus, playing from its roof in whatever location they can park up in. They have been “hired” by Conan O’Brien to be his new house band. And they are huge in Cuba. Following a string of highly acclaimed popfunk releases, the band is showing a more serious, soulful approach on their new album, ‘Angels & Bandits’, although their live performances continue to be one great big party. You can have a lot of fun delving into the world of Eternal Erection so go ahead; get aroused.
